"unstable lives, unstable archives"
breaking down the house is an experimental short film exploring complex diasporic and interracial relations alongside the fracturing of family bonds. Home videos shot by the artist's children in Ontario are remixed with still images and voice recordings produced in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl by relatives in Jamaica. 16mm film was hand-processed with plants that migrated during the transatlantic trade of enslaved peoples such as logwood, annatto, sugar cane/rum, and sorrel which contribute colour and texture to the film. By situating personal experiences alongside the wreckage from the artist’s ancestral home, the work serves as witness to an environment coping with the fallout of colonial-racial-capitalist value systems.
